1Password has integrated with Anthropic’s Claude AI to allow the agent to access and use Mac users’ stored passwords and one-time passcodes for browser tasks without exposing the credentials to the model or its memory. This addresses the shift where AI agents act on users’ behalf, such as comparing deals, adding items to carts, or completing purchases, but previously faced login barriers requiring password sharing or manual intervention.
Built on a zero-exposure architecture, 1Password remains the source of truth for secrets, granting access only at runtime. When Claude needs to sign in, 1Password handles the authentication securely so credentials never enter the AI. This aims to enable secure agent actions without the tradeoffs of credential exposure or halted automation.
The development raises the rhetorical question of what could go wrong, as AI agents gain more capability to click, buy, and update accounts.
