Opera has become the first browser to natively implement Paste Protect, a feature designed to defend against clipboard hijacking and ClickFix-style attacks. This protection combines existing Hijack protection from 2021 with new Injection protection specifically targeting social engineering that tricks users into pasting and executing malicious commands. It is enabled by default and warns users of suspicious clipboard activity before content can be executed.
ClickFix attacks have surged to become the dominant threat, accounting for over 53% of all malware loader activity in 2025 per Huntress data, surpassing all other techniques combined. The host has long advocated for OS-level interventions, particularly from Microsoft, to caution or block browser-to-clipboard pastes of potentially dangerous content, but browsers are stepping in where OSes have not.
While Opera's move is praised as proactive, its roughly 2% global market share means limited impact, as the users most needing protection are unlikely to use it. The effectiveness of ClickFix ensures it will persist until rendered ineffective system-wide, ideally through broader OS or major browser adoption rather than niche solutions.
