Small businesses are increasingly adopting cloud services to gain flexibility, cut infrastructure costs and support remote work, yet many IT leaders remain concerned about security and compliance. Misconceptions about cloud security can lead to costly mistakes or missed opportunities. This article addresses five key questions that small business IT leaders should ask when evaluating cloud security.
Moving applications to the cloud does not inherently reduce security; major cloud providers typically invest more heavily in advanced tools, monitoring and expertise than most small businesses can afford on their own. Security is a shared responsibility: providers secure the infrastructure, while customers must correctly configure services such as multifactor authentication, storage access and user permissions. Misconfigurations remain the customer’s liability.
Compliance obligations do not disappear in the cloud. Organizations must still enforce data access controls, proper data-handling practices and industry-specific regulatory requirements, even when providers supply certifications and audit reports. Identity and access management becomes even more critical without physical office boundaries, requiring centralized identity systems, MFA, conditional access policies, geofencing and continuous monitoring.
Encryption alone is insufficient.
